Abstract

Anemia and neonatal jaundice are contributing factors to infant mortality. Delaying cord cutting increases iron supply by 40-50 mg/kg, prevent premature erythrocyte damage and avoiding the accumulation of bilirubin. Aim of this study was to determine effect of cutting umbilical cord on hemoglobin levels and neonatal jaundice. Quasi-Experimental research method with Posttest-only control design. The research sample using consecutive sampling was 101 babies. Immediate cord cutting to 50 babies and delayed to 51 babies. The research instrument used HBmeter and kramer standards. Analysis with the Independent T-Test test with a significance level of α <0.05. Results of the study showed that the mean hemoglobin level of infants was higher in delayed cord cutting using the Independent T-Test (P value = 0.000). Meanwhile, the mean jaundice was lower in delayed cord cutting with Independent T-Test (P value = 0.010). In conclusion, delayed cord cutting affects hemoglobin levels and prevents neonatal jaundice
