This study explores the communication adaptation process among cross-regional students (santri) at Pondok Pesantren Faqih Hasyim who face language and cultural differences that challenge social interaction. This research used a descriptive qualitative design based on Interaction Adaptation Theory, with the data collected through observation and in-depth enquiry of several santri. Several adaptation strategies are found: convergence mirroring, in which one adapts their speech and behaviour to that provided by their peers, and reciprocity compensation where equilibrium interaction is maintained through a compromise of the individual versus total adjustment. No evidence of divergence was found, as the pesantren environment prioritizes unity and social harmony.. These findings highlight that adaptive communication skills are crucial for fostering empathy, tolerance, and social cohesion in a multicultural pesantren environment.
