This study analyzes how the film Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap contributes to shaping the image of North Sumatra as a tourist destination through the representation of its natural beauty and Batak culture. Using a qualitative approach informed by Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory, this study explores how the film constructs representations of North Sumatra and how these images shape viewers’ interpretations. The portrayal of Lake Toba, with its prominent visual emphasis, emerges as one of the film’s strongest attractions for potential tourists. At the same time, the scenes featuring local traditions and everyday cultural practices help affirm a distinct regional identity. The emotional thread woven through the narrative also contributes to a subtle idea of attachment to one’s place of origin, suggesting how cinema can influence audience perceptions of a particular region.
