Abstract

This study was conducted on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) engaged in the manufacture of machine components. The problem is a SMEs is product defect with defect rate 5,31%, resulting in waste because the products cannot be recycled. This study aims to minimize waste in the turning production process. Value Stream Mapping and 5 Why's methods were used to map production flow and analyze problems. Results identified wastes: waiting 19%, motion 10%, overprocessing 9%, and defects 6%. Initial mapping showed value-added time of 4,506.04 seconds and lead time of 9,605.13 seconds 2.67 hours/unit. Through 5 Why's analysis, root causes were identified: no SOPs, machine parts far from reach, no process standards, and minimal operator training. Improvement recommendations included equipment preparation SOPs, machine parts layout reorganization, process standardization, and training. After improvements (future state mapping), value-added time remained 4,506.04 seconds while lead time decreased to 6,780.18 seconds 1.88 hours/unit).
