Abstract

The purpose of this study was to introduce and apply puzzle learning media to improve the early reading skills of first-grade elementary school students. The study used a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental form and a one-group pretest-posttest design. The research respondents were all 30 first-grade students of SDN Ganggang Panjang Tanggulangin Sidoarjo, who were selected using a saturated sampling technique. The data collection tool was in the form of pretest and posttest questions arranged based on five indicators of early reading skills according to Farida Rahim, including the ability to name letters, read words, connect sounds with letters, read fluently, and understand reading. Data analysis techniques were carried out through normality tests (Shapiro-Wilk) and paired sample t-tests with the help of the IBM SPSS Statistics program. The results of the analysis showed a significant difference between the pretest and posttest scores, with a significance of 0.000 (p < 0.05).
