Abstract

This study explores cosplay practices, particularly crossplay, as a medium for deconstructing gender stereotypes in contemporary society. It examines how crossplay dismantles rigid gender constructs and opens a more fluid space for identity expression. Drawing on Judith Butler’s theory of performativity and Jacques Derrida’s concept of deconstruction, the research highlights how cosplay enables individuals to express identities beyond conventional gender norms. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, in-depth interviews were conducted with ten active members of the cosplay/crossplay community. Findings reveal that cosplay functions not only as entertainment but also as a means of identity exploration, coping with social pressures, and challenging fixed gender meanings. Crossplay allows individuals to present both masculine and feminine traits without being bound to biological identity, framing gender as a negotiable social construct. Despite societal resistance, cosplay and social media create inclusive spaces for expression, fostering greater awareness of gender fluidity as a transformative cultural practice.
