Abstract

This study investigates ontogenic obstacles in computational thinking among sixth-grade students when solving number pattern problems. Using a case study approach, the findings reveal challenges in three main components: decomposition, where students struggle to connect information with symbols when breaking problems down; abstraction, where they fail to generalize symbol models for the nth pattern; and algorithm, where they are unable to formulate problem-solving steps for more complex nth patterns. These results highlight the key difficulties students face in applying computational thinking to number pattern tasks.
