Interpersonal Communication for Spouse in Deciding Childfree in Surabaya

Abstract

Childfree refers to the decision of individuals or couples not to have children, either biologically or through adoption. In Indonesia, this phenomenon is still considered taboo and controversial, as society values family and lineage continuity. Choosing to be childfree is a personal decision that requires strong interpersonal communication, mutual understanding, and responsibility within the couple. This study aims to explore how interpersonal communication functions in married couples committed to a childfree life. Using a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation. Findings reveal that interpersonal communication among childfree couples is dyadic, intimate, and deeply personal, enabling them to navigate psychological challenges and societal rejection. Despite negative perceptions, the decision to be childfree is a conscious, autonomous, and legitimate choice made without external pressure.
