Abstract

This study aims to determine the improvement in students' critical thinking skills through the application of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model in mathematics lessons. This study uses a quantitative approach with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The study involved 23 fourth-grade students at SDN Kendalpecabean Sidoarjo using a saturated sampling technique. The test instruments include four critical thinking indicators: obtaining and processing information, analyzing information, reflecting on thoughts, and making decisions. The normality test results showed that the data were normally distributed and homogeneous in the homogeneity test. The paired sample t-test showed a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores, with α = 0.05 yielding a significance value of < 0.001, meaning that H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted. The N-Gain value is in the moderate category, indicating that PBL has a positive effect on improving the critical thinking skills of fourth-grade elementary school students in mathematics.
