The Effect of Using Duolingo App on Vocabulary Learning among Seventh-Grade Junior High School

Vocabulary acquisition is a crucial component of English language learning, particularly for junior high school students. Traditional instructional methods, such as rote memorization and textbook-based teaching, often fail to sustain learner motivation or support long-term retention. In response, digital applications like Duolingo have emerged as innovative tools due to their gamified and interactive features. Despite Duolingo’s global popularity, its application in Indonesian classroom settings remains limited, and research on its effectiveness in secondary education is still lacking, this study aims to investigate the effectiveness of Duolingo in enhancing vocabulary mastery among seventh-grade students at SMP Muhammadiyah 8 Tanggulangin. A pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design was employed with 23 students. The participants received a one-week Duolingo-based intervention, and data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired-sample t-tests the results revealed a significant improvement in vocabulary scores (from 55.87 to 82.61, p = 0.000), indicating that Duolingo positively impacts vocabulary acquisition.
