Fast Food Consumption and Body Mass Index with The Pain Scale of Dysmenorrhea in Adolescent Girls

Abstract

Dysmenorrhea is menstrual pain that can disrupt daily activities. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are 1,769,425 reported cases, with 90% of women experiencing dysmenorrhea and 10–15% experiencing it severely. In Indonesia, the prevalence of dysmenorrhea is 64.25%, comprising 54.89% primary and 9.36% secondary dysmenorrhea. This study aims to examine the relationship between fast food consumption and Body Mass Index (BMI) with the pain scale of dysmenorrhea in adolescent girls. The research used correlational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate methods. The chi-square test showed a significant relationship between fast food consumption (ρ = 0.025) and BMI (ρ = 0.031) with the level of dysmenorrhea pain. The findings indicate that adolescent girls who frequently consume fast food and have abnormal BMI tend experience more severe dysmenorrhea. Further research is needed to explore other variables that may influence dysmenorrhea pain intensity.
