The Use of Duolingo as A Digital Tool for Enchaching Junior High School Student’ Vocabulary Mastery

This study examines how junior high school students can improve their English vocabulary using the Duolingo app as a digital learning tool. With its accessible, gamified, and interactive features, Duolingo has gained popularity in education. The research used a pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design, involving 32 seventh-grade students from SMP Negeri in Mojokerto with low English proficiency. Students participated in Duolingo-based lessons on the topic “Schedule.” Results showed a statistically significant improvement in vocabulary mastery, with a significance value of 0.000 (< 0.05). The app’s dynamic features—such as progress tracking, instant feedback, and rewards—boosted student motivation and engagement. The findings confirm Duolingo’s effectiveness in enhancing vocabulary acquisition and suggest it as a valuable supplement in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction for junior high school students. Further research is recommended to evaluate its long-term impact and effectiveness across various contexts and language skills.
