Abstract

One of the responsibilities of parents is to provide education to their children, both formal and informal. One form of education that is no less important in child development is character education. However, not all parents have the opportunity to provide character education directly to their children due to work commitments or other factors. This study aims to determine the role of the family in the character education of children raised by grandparents. This study used a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method with three participants through in-depth interviews, and data analysis using Collaizzi's nine-step technique (1978). Data collection was carried out through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results show that family functions include protection, affection, socialization, religious functions, economics, recreation as a place of comfort, and biological functions. The family plays an important role in children's moral education and is the first school in the child's developmental stage.
