The STEAM Approach: Implementation and its Effect on Students’ Motivation and Learning Outcomes

Abstract

The rapid advancement of technology in the Industrial Revolution 4.0 era has significantly influenced education, especially in enhancing students' motivation and learning outcomes. In science learning, particularly on the topic of energy transformation, selecting a suitable approach is crucial. This study aimed to explore the implementation and impact of the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) approach on students' motivation and achievement. Using a quasi-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design, the research involved 30 fourth-grade students at SDN Kemangsen 1 Krian. Data were analyzed using the paired sample t-test. The results showed a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores, with a sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.00 < 0.05, indicating that the STEAM approach positively affects both motivation and learning outcomes. Therefore, STEAM can be considered an effective and relevant alternative method for science instruction on energy transformation.
