Abstract

The increasing use of digital technology, especially in entertainment and communication, has expanded the functionality of Set-Top Boxes (STBs) beyond traditional television viewing. By utilizing the Casa OS operating system, STBs can be repurposed as cost-effective network-attached storage (NAS) servers. This approach offers an affordable alternative to expensive NAS devices, making data storage more accessible. Using the System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) methodology, which encompasses six stages—planning, analysis, design, implementation, testing, and management—this research ensures a thorough system development process. The resulting NAS system enables efficient data storage and sharing within a local network. While Raspberry Pi is a common solution for building a NAS, its configuration is often considered complex. In contrast, repurposing second-hand STBs with Casa OS provides a simpler and more budget-friendly option. This study successfully demonstrates the development of an STB-based NAS server, which streamlines work processes and facilitates seamless data exchange.
