Cigarettes produce carbon monoxide (CO), which binds with hemoglobin to form carboxyhemoglobin (COHb), resulting in a decrease in oxygen levels in the blood because the bond between CO and hemoglobin is stronger. Smoking increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases, including stroke, sudden death, heart failure, peripheral vascular disease, and aortic aneurysm. The health impacts of increased CO levels each year include the formation of carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) in the blood, disrupting oxygen flow and causing poisoning. Vehicle exhaust and burnt food products can also expose people to CO, damaging the human respiratory system. The aim of this research is to determine the difference in COHb levels in the blood of active smokers and passive smokers. The research design is a cross-sectional experimental study with the population being the residents of Taman Sukodono Housing, Sidoarjo. The sample consisted of 16 people in each group, with COHb levels measured using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer.
