Abstract

This study explores the communication strategies of Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) in overcoming culture shock while working in Japan, using Gudykunst's Anxiety Uncertainty Management (AUM) Theory and the ABC's of Culture Shock by Ward, Bochner, and Furham. Through a phenomenological approach, six PMI informants with over two years of experience in Japan were interviewed. The study identifies three primary anxieties faced by PMI: language, habits, and mindset-related. To manage these, PMI employ active strategies (adapting to and learning about Japanese culture), passive strategies (self-motivation and acceptance of cultural differences), and interactive strategies (improving intercultural communication through community involvement and openness to new values).
