Abstract

This study investigates the impact of teaching writing skills with figurative language on students' writing abilities at a junior high school in Sidoarjo. A pre-experimental design was used to determine if explicit instruction could improve students' writing skills. The research population consisted of class VIII students, with 30 students as a sample. The results showed that the strategy adopted improved students' writing abilities, and the use of explicit instruction in teaching writing figurative language significantly improved the quality of their writing. This approach helps students grasp fundamental writing skills and empowers them to apply these skills independently in various academic and real-world contexts. The study highlights the importance of teachers being aware of students' challenges when teaching writing in English.
