The Influence of Time Variation and Number of Fiberglass Layers in the Composite Material Manufacturing Process on Tensile Strength, Bending Strength, and Surface Smoothness

The research explores manufacturing fiberglass composite materials using an open mold process with a pressing technique to overcome the hand lay-up method's shortcomings of producing less smooth surfaces. Conducted at Muhammadiyah University of Sidoarjo (UMSIDA) and Malang State Polytechnic, specimens underwent tensile tests (ASTM D638 Type I), bending tests (ASTM D790), and surface flatness measurements with a dial indicator. Variations included the number of fiberglass layers (2, 3, and 4 layers) and pressing duration (3, 4, and 5 hours). Tensile tests showed the best stress and strain at 2 layers and 3 hours of pressing. Bending tests revealed the best stress and modulus of elasticity at 4 layers and 4 hours of pressing. Optimal surface flatness was achieved with 3 layers and 4 hours of pressing. This optimization is crucial for efficient pressing methods in future composite material production.
