Design of a Lightning Strike Counter Tool in the Mojosari ULP Distribution Network Based on IoT

Abstract

The electricity distribution system faces frequent interruptions or blackouts, including those caused by lightning strikes. Given Indonesia's tropical climate and high humidity, lightning strikes are common. This study addresses the need for a real-time lightning strike monitoring tool for the electricity distribution network. Leveraging internet of things (IoT) technology, a lightning strike counter was designed using ACS712, DHT11, and LDR sensors, with data processing conducted by ESP32. The results were displayed on a 16x2 LCD and sent via telegram message. Observations and analysis demonstrated the accuracy of the ASS712 sensor to be 95.2%, the DHT11 sensor to be 98.5%, and the functionality of the LDR sensor. Consequently, the developed tool provides valuable insights for monitoring lightning strikes and evaluating grounding density in the distribution network.
