Students' Mastery of Past Tense and the Ability in Writing Recount Text: Are They Correlated?

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the relationship between simple past tense mastery and the ability to write recount texts in class VIII students of SMP Muhammadiyah 10 Sidoarjo. The sample consisted of 29 students selected using a convenience sampling technique. The data is given through a simple past tense mastery test with 30 multiple choice formats and a recount text writing test. It was found that the Pearson correlation value obtained was r-obtained (0.848) higher than the r-table (0.367), with a sig value of 0.000 < 0.05 which means the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Mastery of simple past tense with the ability to write recount text is positively related. The R- obtained by 0.848 is at a very high category level. From there, it can be concluded that the simple past tense is closely related to the recount text.
