In today's modern era, the use of social media is very important for all people. Not only that, the influence of the Covid-19 pandemic has also affected people's patterns of communication because of government regulations not to leave the house. For this reason, social media is needed to provide mass information and entertainment. Sidoarjo Regency as one of the pillars of the Capital of East Java Province is an area that is experiencing rapid development. This study uses a qualitative method with a virtual ethnographic study conducted on five informants to find out what motives underlie users' use of social media. Sidoarjo Regency is able to become one of the strategic areas for regional economic development. Fourth of the five informants used WhatsApp social media as a substitute for communication that was able to facilitate their activities and activities.
