The Use of Picture-Based Media to Enhance Spontaneous Speaking Skills of EFL Learners at Junior High School

This study investigates the use of picture-based media to enhance the spontaneous speaking skills of EFL learners at the junior high school level. The research was conducted at a junior high school in Sidoarjo, East Java, involving 36 eighth-grade students using a quantitative pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design. Data were analyzed using a paired sample t-test. The findings showed a significant improvement in students' speaking performance, with a mean gain of 17.78 points, a significance value of .000, and a t-value of -12.323. The percentage of students in the Poor category also decreased from 50% to 5.6% after the treatment. These results indicate that picture-based media effectively enhances EFL learners' spontaneous speaking skills by reducing anxiety, activating background knowledge, and encouraging natural verbal interaction, supporting the principles of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), which emphasizes meaningful interaction and authentic language use.
