Teenagers Perceptions of Strict Parents Communication Patterns in Sidoarjo

The phenomenon of strict parents has become increasingly discussed among adolescents as it relates to parental communication patterns that tend to be strict, authoritarian, and limiting children’s freedom. This condition creates diverse perceptions among teenagers, particularly within family relationships in Sidoarjo, which are influenced by both traditional cultural values and modernization. This study aims to analyze adolescents’ perceptions of strict parents communication patterns in Sidoarjo and to understand how teenagers interpret parental rules and control. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method using Stuart Hall’s exncoding-decoding theory. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with adolescents experiencing strict parents communication patterns. The findings reveal three forms of audience reception: dominant-hegemonic reading, negotiated reading, and oppositional reading. These results indicate that parental communication patterns are interpreted differently depending on adolescents’ experiences and social contexts. In conclusion, more open, flexible, and dialogic family communication patterns are needed to support adolescents’ emotional development.
