ESP32-Based Smart Mat for Detecting and Counting Exercise Repetitions

Exercise is important for maintaining physical health, but many people struggle to count repetitions or track workout duration manually, reducing effectiveness. This study develops an ESP32-based smart mat that detects movements and automatically counts push-ups, sit-ups, and planks. It uses an FSR sensor for pressure detection and a VL53L0X sensor for distance measurement, with data processed by an ESP32 and displayed on an OLED with buzzer notifications. Using an experimental prototype method, results show the FSR responds well, while the VL53L0X has a low error (0–2%). System testing recorded errors of 4% for push-ups, 4–20% for sit-ups, and 0% for planks. Overall, the smart mat is effective, practical, and efficient for self-monitoring exercise.
