Students' Adaptive Behavior in Reading Literacy Learning in the Classroom: A Case Study of People with Intellectual Disabilities

Abstract

This study is motivated by limited understanding of adaptive behavior of students with students’ adaptive behavior in this context. A qualitative approach with a case study design was used. Data were collected through observation, interviews, reading tests, and documentation, then analyzed using the interactive model of Miles & Huberman, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results show that adaptive behavior develops in three domains: conceptual, social, and practical. In the conceptual domain, students are still at the early reading stage and require concrete media. In the social domain, students can interact with guidance. In the practical domain, students show independence in simple activities. It is concluded that reading literacy learning supports adaptive behavior development. Therefore, teachers are recommended to apply appropriate strategies and media based on students’ needs.
