Self Motivation in Adolescent Who Do Not Continue Higher Education: A Qualitative Study

This study aims to describe self-motivation in adolescents who do not continue their education to college in Banjar
Talela Village, Sampang Regency, Madura. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach. The subjects consisted
of two high school graduates who did not continue their education, supported by data from close relatives. Subjects
were selected using snowball sampling. Data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews and
analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. Results showed that decisions were influenced by family
economic limitations, low academic self-confidence, prior educational experiences, and emotional relationships with
parents. Based on Self-Determination Theory, autonomy appears in conscious decision-making, competence is not
optimally fulfilled, and relatedness is the dominant factor through family support. This study shows that the decision
not to continue education is an adaptive response to adolescents’ social and psychological conditions. These findings
provide insight for interventions to support educational decision-making among adolescents locally relevant.
