The Implementation of the Storytelling Method to Improve Indonesian Speaking Skills of Children Aged 4–6 Years in the Madurese Ethnic Group

This study examines the effectiveness of the storytelling method in improving Indonesian language skills among children aged 4–6 in the Madurese community. Many Madurese children predominantly use their local language in daily interactions, which affects their proficiency in Indonesian. The research applied a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model, conducted in two cycles involving planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The participants were 17 children from Miftahul Ulum VII Kindergarten. Findings indicate that storytelling significantly enhanced children’s language abilities, including listening skills, vocabulary acquisition, speaking confidence, and the ability to construct simple sentences, with overall improvement exceeding 40%. In addition to linguistic development, the method positively influenced children’s social and emotional growth. They became more confident, more willing to express themselves, and more capable of interacting with peers. Integrating culturally relevant stories also contributed to strengthening the children’s cultural identity while supporting their language development.
