Criticising the Government Through the Music Video for the Song ‘Negri Ngeri’ by the Band Marjinal

This study examines the lyrics and aesthetics of the music video for the song “negri ngeri” by the band Marjinal using Charles Sanders Peirce’s triadic semiotics to reveal criticism of government oppression. The findings show that the iconic sign that quickly depicts the chaos of demonstrations, the indexical sign “pay the police,” reflects extortion by officials, and the symbolic sign “negri ngeri” depicts the myth of a failed state, forming an interpretation of resistance from those who are oppressed, making punk an effective alternative narrative in the TikTok era.
