Abstract

This study examines 'brain rot' through the content of the TikTok account @cnnindonesia. Using qualitative methods and a phenomenological approach, it explores students' subjective experiences consuming digital content and how Joseph A. DeVito's theory of perception explains their understanding of the phenomenon. Data was collected via in-depth interviews with five informants: active students aged 18-25, with TikTok accounts and followers of @cnnindonesia. Findings reveal that students' perceptions of 'brain rot' develop through a five-stage process, with the interpretation-evaluation stage being the most crucial. Informants agree this phenomenon is real among students, marked by declining critical thinking skills and avoidance of in-depth content due to excessive consumption of 'light' content. However, @cnnindonesia content sparks strong self-awareness, encouraging students to be more selective in content choices, limit social media use, and retrain focus. The study's conclusions highlight the importance of digital literacy and self-awareness in mitigating the negative impacts of 'brain rot'
