Development of a Forward Chaining-Based Expert System for Recommendations on the Cultivation of Dragon Fruit, Avocado, Papaya, and Durian Based on Geographical Parameters

Abstract

This study developed a forward chaining- expert system to recommend the cultivation of tropical fruit plants— dragon fruit, avocado, papaya, and durian—based on geographical parameters such as altitude, temperature, soil pH, rainfall, and soil type. The research employed a System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) with the Waterfall model, including problem identification, knowledge acquisition, system design, implementation, and testing. The expert system was implemented as a web-based platform with a knowledge base formulated from agronomic literature and expert interviews. Functional testing using Black Box Testing with six scenarios demonstrated valid outcomes in all cases, confirming that the inference engine works effectively in providing accurate recommendations or withholding results when no match is found. The system offers practical support for farmers in making data-driven cultivation decisions. However, it remains limited to four commodities and five parameters, highlighting the need for further expansion and integration with IoT sensors for real-time recommendations.
