Abstract

Hemodialysis is the primary therapy for patients with advanced-stage Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) to partially replace kidney function. This study aimed to analyze the comparison of erythrocyte, leukocyte, platelet counts, and peripheral blood smear morphology in CKD patients before and after hemodialysis. Conducted on 20 CKD patients at RS Petrokimia Gresik using a comparative analytic approach. Blood samples were analyzed pre and post hemodialysis using a hematology analyzer and Wright stained peripheral smears. The results showed significant differences in erythrocyte count (p=0.000), a significant decrease in platelet count (p=0.000), and no significant change in leukocyte count (p=0.435) between the pre and posthemodialysis phases. Morphological evaluation showed persistent erythrocyte abnormalities, including burr cells, tear drop cells, ovalocytes, and target cells. Additionally, toxic granules and hypersegmented neutrophils were observed, while platelet morphology remained generally normal. These findings highlight the importance of hematologic and morphologic evaluations in monitoring CKD patients undergoing hemodialysis.
