Abstract

Sudden enlargement is commonly used in the context of fluid engineering which refers to sudden changes in the size of the pipe, which can lead to pressure drops or head losses. This study aims to determine the effect of sudden enlargement shape variations (square edge, projecting edge, and rounded edge) on head loss in laminar fluid flow. The experiment was carried out on acrylic pipes with two levels of flow rate, namely 6 liters/minute and 4 liters/minute. Data was obtained from pressure measurements using U manometers at two test points. The results show that the square edge has the best efficiency at high flow rates (6 L/min) with the lowest energy loss. At low flow rates (4 L/min), rounded edges show better performance in maintaining flow stability. Meanwhile, the projecting edge had the highest rate of energy loss in both conditions.
