Abstract

Concrete is a widely used construction material due to its relatively high compressive strength and the ready availability of its constituent materials. However, the continuous use of natural aggregates and the increasing volume of organic waste have created a need for more environmentally friendly alternative materials. One material with potential for utilization is spent coffee grounds, which can be processed into biochar via pyrolysis. This study aimed to investigate the effect of using biochar derived from spent coffee grounds (produced via closed pyrolysis) as a partial substitute for fine aggregate on concrete compressive strength; to compare the compressive strength of normal concrete with that of biochar-containing concrete; and to determine the substitution percentage that yields the best compressive strength results. An experimental laboratory study was conducted using concrete with a target grade of K-300.
