The Relationship Between Diabetes Mellitus and Preeclampsia with the Incidence of Postpartum Hemorrhage

Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) remains a serious complication contributing to maternal mortality, with diabetes mellitus and preeclampsia recognized as potential risk factors. This study aimed to analyze the association of diabetes mellitus and preeclampsia with PPH among women giving birth at R.T. Notopuro Regional General Hospital, Sidoarjo. This observational analytic study used a case-control design based on medical records of 146 women who gave birth between January and December 2025, comprising 73 cases and 73 controls. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test for preeclampsia and Fisher’s exact test for diabetes mellitus. Diabetes mellitus was significantly associated with PPH (p=0.033; OR=8.862; 95% CI 1.079–72.781), while preeclampsia was not significantly associated with PPH (p=0.081; OR=3.704; 95% CI 0.975–14.065). Close monitoring of maternal conditions is important to reduce the risk of PPH.
