This study explores the experiences of self-handicapping among students who failed the National Test-Based Selection (SNBT). Self-handicapping is a self-protective strategy in which individuals create or claim obstacles to protect self-esteem when facing possible failure. This study employed a qualitative phenomenological approach involving three participants selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using phenomenological analysis. The findings revealed four major themes: behavioral self-handicapping, claimed self-handicapping, fear of failure, and internal and external factors influencing self-handicapping. Behavioral self-handicapping included procrastination, delaying study activities, and excessive social media use, which reduced SNBT preparation. Claimed self-handicapping involved attributing failure to difficult questions, intense competition, physical conditions, and limited preparation time. Fear of failure emerged as the dominant psychological factor, while low self-efficacy, perfectionism, parental expectations, social pressure, and competitive environments also contributed. Self-handicapping may temporarily protect self-esteem but can hinder academic preparation and goal achievement.
