Association Between Nutritional Status and Anemia Among Tenth-Grade Female Students at SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Sidoarjo

Abstract

Anemia remains a health problem among adolescent girls, while nutritional status based on Body Mass Index-for-Age (BMI-for-Age) does not fully explain its occurrence. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between BMI-for-Age nutritional status and anemia among tenth-grade female students at SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Sidoarjo. An analytical observational study with a cross-sectional approach was conducted using total sampling involving 118 students. Nutritional status was assessed using BMI-for-Age Z-scores based on the WHO Growth Reference 2007, while anemia was determined by hemoglobin levels. Fisher’s Exact Test was used because Chi-Square assumptions were not met. Most students had normal nutritional status (70.3%) and were not anemic (61.9%). The analysis showed no significant relationship between nutritional status and anemia (p=0.650; >0.05), consistent with previous findings. Further research should examine iron intake, iron supplementation adherence, menstruation, and infection.
