Abstract

Student’s conceptual understanding plays a crucial role in the success of science learning, particularly regarding the topics of temperature and heat. This study aims to analyze students’ levels of conceptual understanding using the Five-Tier Diagnostic Test. The study employed a quantitative approach using a survey method. The study population consisted of 80 seventh-grade students in Sidoarjo Regency, with a sample of 80 students selected using saturated sampling. The research instrument was the Five-Tier Diagnostic Test, comprising 20 items. Based on the research results, it was found that the percentage of students in the “Conceptual Understanding” (PK) category was 14.69%, indicating that students’ level of conceptual understanding of temperature and heat remains in the “very poor” category. It is hoped that these findings will serve as a basis for teachers in determining appropriate teaching strategies and learning media to improve students’ conceptual understanding of temperature and heat.
