Adherence to Prenatal Iron Supplementation as a Determinant of Anemia Prevention Among Pregnant Women

Background: Anaemia during pregnancy continues to be a considerable public health concern in Indonesia, affecting 27.7% of pregnant women. Although iron tablet supplementation is a government program to prevent anemia, adherence to iron tablet consumption remains a contributing factor. Methods: An analytical observational study using a cross-sectional approach among 32 pregnant women in their third trimester. Participants were recruited through a total sampling technique. Adherence to iron tablet intake was evaluated using the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8), while anemia was determined by hemoglobin measurement. Data were analyzed using the Chi-Square test. Results: Half of the respondents (50.0%) were adherent to iron tablet consumption, and 68.8% were non-anemic. A significant association was found between adherence and anemia (p=0.022). Conclusion: Adherence to iron tablet consumption was associated with anemia among pregnant women. Therefore, strengthening health education and counseling is necessary to improve adherence and reduce the risk of anemia during pregnancy.
