Preventive Maintenance and Repair Strategy for Diesel Forklift Hydraulic Systems and Engines Using FMEA and RCM Methods

Abstract

XYZ is a company providing rental and repair services for diesel forklifts. The company faces frequent breakdowns in hydraulic systems and engines, causing downtime and reducing operational effectiveness. This study aims to identify high-risk components and determine appropriate maintenance strategies using Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM). Data were collected through observations, interviews, documentation, and historical breakdown records. FMEA identified failure risks based on Risk Priority Number (RPN), while RCM determined suitable maintenance actions. The study recorded 18 breakdown incidents with 84 hours of total downtime. The highest-risk components were the hydraulic pump (RPN 288), hydraulic cylinder seal (224), injector (192), hydraulic hose (160), and hydraulic filter (140). RCM recommended Scheduled Restoration, Scheduled Discard, and Scheduled On-Condition Tasks. These strategies are expected to reduce breakdown frequency and downtime, improve forklift reliability, and support effective maintenance cost control.
