Development of an Android-Based Pomodoro Application with an Active Blocking Intervention to Improve Student Academic Productivity

Academic procrastination caused by smartphone distraction is a critical problem hindering student productivity. Most time-management apps passively monitor activity without mechanisms to immediately break the procrastination cycle. his study aims to develop an Android-based Pomodoro application equipped with a Focus Guard feature, functioning as an active app-blocking intervention (fullscreen overlay) against distracting applications. The application was developed using the Waterfall method, Kotlin, and Jetpack Compose. Evaluation involved Blackbox testing on 13 scenarios (100% valid) and effectiveness testing on 35 students. Wilcoxon signed-rank test confirmed a highly significant productivity improvement (p < 0.001), with mean scores increasing from 19.06 to 22.54. The System Usability Scale (SUS) assessment yielded a score of 68.93, placing it in the Marginal High acceptability range (Grade C) with a Good rating. In conclusion, this application is functionally reliable, highly effective in reducing digital distractions, and provides an intuitive interface.
