Implementation Report: he Use of Illustrated Storybooks in Guided Reading Lessons for First-Grade Elementary Students

Abstract

This study aims to address low reading engagement and fluency in Civic and Literacy education during
guided reading sessions in a 1st-grade classroom. To solve this issue, illustrated storybooks (Buku Cerita
Bergambar) were implemented during the learning process. The method follows a Teaching Implementation
Report framework consisting of planning, implementation, assessment, and reflection. The intervention was
carried out in a class of 1st-grade students using interactive guided reading techniques with colorful visual aids
and engaging narratives. The results showed a significant increase in student focus, letter-sound recognition,
and active participation during reading activities. The percentage of active and fluent students rose from 40%
in the initial condition to 85% post-implementation. In conclusion, illustrated storybooks effectively stimulate
cognitive engagement and visual memory, making them a practical strategy for primary school teachers to build
lively and inclusive early literacy classrooms.
