Abstract

Beginning reading is a foundational literacy skill for first-grade students, yet several learners still struggle to recognize letter sounds and blend them into syllables and words. This learning implementation report describes the use of the spelling method to improve beginning reading skills in a Grade 1 elementary classroom. The strategy was organized through systematic stages: letter-sound recognition, syllable formation, simple word reading, individual reading practice, and short formative reflection. The implementation was conducted in two 2 x 35-minute sessions with nine students, consisting of three very capable students, four capable students, and two students who required intensive guidance.
