The Relationship Between Self-Esteem and Social Conformity and Smoking Behavior Among Adolescents Who Use E-Cigarettes (Vapes) at Tomoro Coffee in Mojosari Subdistrict

The increasing use of e-cigarettes (vapes) among adolescents suggests that smoking behavior is influenced by psychological and social factors. This study examined the relationship between self-esteem and social conformity with e-cigarette use among adolescents at Tomoro Coffee, Mojosari District. A quantitative correlational design was employed with 192 adolescent e-cigarette users selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using Likert-scale questionnaires, including the revised Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES-R), a social conformity scale based on Kelman’s theory, and the Glover–Nilsson Smoking Behavioral Questionnaire. Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression. Results showed that self-esteem and social conformity were positively and significantly associated with e-cigarette use, with social conformity contributing more strongly. Together, these variables explained 45.3% of the variance in smoking behavior. The findings highlight the importance of strengthening adolescents’ self-control and resilience to peer influence and social pressure in prevention efforts.
