Abstract

Background: The postpartum period is often accompanied by pain and stress that can hinder maternal recovery. Deep breathing is a safe non-pharmacological intervention. This study aimed to determine the effect of deep breathing techniques on pain intensity and stress levels in postpartum mothers. Methods: An experimental study with a pretest-posttest design was conducted involving 46 postpartum mothers divided into intervention and control groups. Data were collected using pain and stress observation sheets and analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test (α=0.05). Results: Mean pain scores decreased from 1.04 to 0.85 (Z=-1.966; p=0.049), while mean stress scores decreased from 1.28 to 0.67 (Z=-5.112; p=0.000). Reductions were also observed in the categories of severe pain and high stress following the intervention. Conclusion: Deep breathing techniques are effective in reducing pain intensity and stress levels in postpartum mothers, making them a suitable non-pharmacological therapy during the postpartum period.
