The Effectiveness of the Combination Extract of White Turi Leaves (Sesbaniaograndiflora (L.) Pers.) and Vitamin C on Albumin and Bilirubin as Indicators of Hepatotoxicity in Male White Rats (Rattus norvegicus) Induced by Paracetamol

Abstract

Liver damage from paracetamol-induced oxidative stress requires natural antioxidant therapy. Sesbania grandiflora (L.) Pers. leaves contain flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, tannins, and phenolics, offering potential hepatoprotection. This experimental laboratory study evaluated the efficacy of combining white turi leaf ethanol extract with vitamin C on bilirubin, albumin, malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, and liver macroscopic appearance in paracetamol-induced male white rats (Rattus norvegicus). Using a post-test-only control group design, 40 rats were divided into eight groups: Kn, K-, K+1, K+2, K+3, P1, P2, and P3. Hepatotoxicity was induced with 1500 mg/kgBW paracetamol. Leaf extract and vitamin C were combined in ratios of 1:1, 2:1, and 1:2. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA or Kruskal–Wallis tests (α=0.05). The results revealed significant differences in MDA and albumin levels (p=0.001), whereas bilirubin levels showed no significant difference (p=0.603). The 2:1 combination provided optimal hepatoprotection by reducing MDA and bilirubin while elevating albumin levels.
