Abstract

This study examines the implementation of ZEP Quiz in teaching reading comprehension and the challenges faced by teachers at the junior high school level. Using a qualitative descriptive case study, the research involved an English teacher at SMPN 1 Candi Sidoarjo. Data were collected through classroom observations and unstructured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis with triangulation. The study is grounded in Game-Based Learning (GBL), Schema Theory, and Discovery Learning. Findings show that ZEP Quiz creates an interactive, student-centered learning environment that improves engagement, motivation, participation, schema activation, comprehension monitoring, and knowledge construction through gamification features such as points, leaderboards, instant feedback, and time-limited challenges. Challenges included unstable internet connections and students’ unfamiliarity with the platform. Teachers addressed these issues by providing clear instructions, demonstrating platform use, monitoring technical conditions, and preparing alternative activities. Overall, ZEP Quiz effectively supports reading comprehension instruction in junior high schools.
