Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of the oil purification process on the breakdown voltage (BDV) and water content of three-phase power transformer oil. The study addresses transformer oil degradation caused by contamination, particularly water, which reduces insulation performance and increases the risk of transformer failure. A quantitative experimental approach was used by comparing transformer oil conditions before and after purification. Primary data were obtained through laboratory testing using a Breakdown Voltage Tester based on IEC 60156 and the Karl Fischer method based on IEC 60186 and ASTM D1533. The results show that oil purification increased the average BDV from 29.45 kV to 80.12kV and reduced water content from 24 ppm to 6.5 ppm. A paired sample t-test (p < 0.05) confirmed a significant difference between pre- and post-treatment conditions. These findings indicate that oil purification effectively imrpoves transformer oil quality and supports condition-based maintenance to improve transformer reliability.
