Risk Factors for Perineal Rupture: Insights into Nutrition and Perineal Length

Abstract

Perineal rupture is a common complication of vaginal delivery that may cause pain, bleeding, infection, and reduced quality of life in postpartum mothers. This study aimed to examine the relationship between nutritional status, perineal length, and the incidence of perineal rupture. An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted at Klinik Pratama Alfa Medika, Surabaya, involving 53 postpartum mothers selected through consecutive sampling. Data were obtained from measurements, observations, and medical records and analyzed using the chi-square test (p < 0.05). Most respondents had normal nutritional status (81.1%), normal/long perineal length (67.9%), and experienced perineal rupture (73.6%). Nutritional status was not significantly associated with perineal rupture (p = 0.609), whereas perineal length showed a significant association (p = 0.003). These findings indicate that perineal length is an important factor associated with perineal rupture, while nutritional status is not significantly related.
