The Effect of Alcohol Consumption and Smoking Habits on Serum of Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) and Gamma Glutamyl Transferase (GGT) Levels

Abstract

Alcohol consumption and smoking can increase the risk of liver cancer, cirrhosis and negatively impact chronic liver disease. This study aimed to determine the effect of alcohol consumption and smoking habits on Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) and Gamma Glutamyl Transferase (GGT) levels based on duration of alcohol consumption (1–<3, 3–5, and >5 years) and duration of smoking (5–<10, 10–15, and >15 years). A laboratory experimental design involved 45 purposively sampled participants. ALP was measured using the Kinetic-DGKC method and GGT using the Kinetic-IFCC method. Data analysis showed that duration of alcohol consumption did not significantly affect ALP (p=0.979) but did affect GGT (p=0.000). Similarly, duration of smoking had no significant effect on ALP (p=0.398) while significantly influencing GGT (p=0.006). Thus, alcohol consumption and smoking, based on duration, do not affect ALP levels but do affect GGT levels.
